According to the study released Thursday in the last decade, scientists announced the existence of large “plumes” of methane in the Martian atmosphere, results that were controversial at the time, since these conclusions es were based on observations made from Earth or a satellite in orbit.

In March 2003, researchers announced they had found a cloud near the Martian equator that had about 19 thousand tons of methane.

Entrentanto, the analysis of data from Curiosity shows only traces of methane in the Martian atmosphere.

Scientists say the discovery of Curiosity onvel indicate that maximum methane was 1.3 per thousand million particles per volume, about six times lower than previously estimated.

The low level of methane in the atmosphere reduces the odds of the Martian soil contains microbes living or fossil orgnicos that produce this gas, adiantaram scientists.

discovery tambma reduces possibility of significant production of methane via meteorites or geologically, according to researcher Christopher Webster, the California Institute of Technology, co-author of the study published in Science .

Curiosity got the soil of Mars in August 2012 and already indicated that the planet have had microbiolgica life in the distant past.
