service Oncology Hospital of Peking University, China, published an unusual announcement: calls to donate blood, but only for 100 “virgin women”. The announcement has stirred controversy.

An unusual

ad is causing a stir in China. The oncology department of the University Hospital of Beijing calls the gift from “blood of virgins”. The request is made specifically for the female community that has never had sex, which did arouse controversy in the press and humor on the internet.

In the ad, the oncology service explained the need for blood samples from 100 virgin women, aged between 18 and 24 years. The samples would be used in a study of human papilloma virus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual intercourse. HPV is the basis of cancer of the cervix and (to a lesser extent) in throat cancer.

“The risk of infection with HPV is very low among women who have never had sex,” explained the spokesman of the university hospital, Guan Jiuping. However, the specificity of the appeal caused the ire of many people, who consider the ad offensive to women.
